Philosophize This : Three Islamic Truths |
Improving listening skills by listening to a podcast |
A. Summary: What was the listening selection about?
The listening session that I've been done on this weekend is listening to a podcast. The podcast that I've been listening to is talking about how philosophy searches for the meaning of "Truth". The speaker of the podcast trying to examine "Truth" through the lenses of three Islamic philosophers who each had a different approach to truth-seeking.
All of the humans in this world have their own perspective of "Truth" and we're all viewing it through a different filter and from a slightly different vantage. Everyone sees the truth that related to their point of view, so it makes the "Truth" were never been obvious to us what the truth was. Because of its ambiguity, truth has always been a subjective term.
There were a lot of conflicts that had been made by diametrical opposites idealistic of the "Truth". Some people failed to arrive at what they see as the absolute truth and then use that truth as the basis for subjugating entire groups of people and trying to take over the world.
Therefore due to a misunderstanding of the idea of the "Truth", philosophers want to guide us to become wiser to arrive at the truth, so it can change the better future of all of humanity. There were three genius thinkers from the Islamic world and their perspectives were had completely different approaches to the best way to arrive at the truth. They came to very different conclusions, but all three approaches are based on sound logic, they had to be. What's even cooler about their different approaches is that all three of them relate to us in modern times in some unique way.
In this episode, the speakers were talking about the nature of truth and examined it through the lenses of three Islamic philosophers who each had a different approach to truth-seeking. First, we're gonna learn and discuss Al-Kindi and what he would have to say about modern-day news organizations and their approach to reporting the "Truth". Then, we're gonna learn and discuss Al-Ghazali, who at one point became so skeptical about our ability to discover the truth, he actually made himself physically ill. Lastly, we're gonna learn and discuss Averroes who wanted philosophy and religion to become a partner.
B. Vocabularies/language expressions you learned
- Blanket single code: A word or phrase that is used to describe multiple groups of related things. The degree of relation may vary. Blanket terms often trade specificity for ease-of-use; in other words, a blanket term by itself gives little detail about the things that it describes or the relationships between them but is easy to say and remember.
- Facet: Any of the definable aspects that make up a subject (as of contemplation) or an object (as of consideration).
- Straightforward: Uncomplicated and easy to do or understand.
- Diametrically opposites: Completely different.
C. Activities: What did you do? What scores did you get
After I practiced my listening skills by listening to a podcast, I decided to take a listening test on the ESL lab website to know what my listening score was. I take an intermediate-level test and I've got 5/5 scores by answering the question based on the audio clip. I think I need to improve my English listening skills by trying to take more difficult level tests.
D. Benefits: What benefits did you learn from this topic?
The benefit that I can learn from the topic of the podcast today is I can learn how to arrive at the "Truth" in the right way. I can learn how to see the definition of the "Truth" from many different perspectives, especially by seeing it through Islamic lenses. I can learn to think and appear what's "Truth" means based on my own paradigm.
